To sell t-shirts on Etsy with DTF transfers, you need three things: designs you have the right to sell, a simple way to produce shirts as orders come in, and listings that answer buyers' questions up front. DTF makes production the easy part. You order full-color transfers, press them onto blanks yourself and never have to buy a printer.
This guide shows how to set up an Etsy t-shirt business around DTF, from picking a niche and a fulfillment model to pricing, listing and shipping your first orders.
Why DTF works for an Etsy t-shirt business
Many Etsy shirt shops carry lots of designs and sell a few of each. DTF fits that pattern well:
- Small batches: there are no setup fees and no minimums on DTF transfers, so you can try a new design with a handful of prints.
- Many designs per order: a 22-inch-wide gang sheet holds designs in different sizes, so one order can restock several listings.
- Bright on dark shirts: transfers include a white underbase, so colors stay vivid on black, navy and other dark blanks.
- More than tees: DTF works on cotton, polyester, blends, canvas and denim, so you can add hoodies and tote bags to your shop.
- Fast restocks: orders placed before 3 PM EST, Monday to Friday, are printed the same day.
Pick a niche buyers are searching for
Broad, generic shirts get lost in search results. A clear niche makes your shop easier to find and your designs easier to plan.
- Search first: type your idea into Etsy search and study what's already there, how it's photographed and how it's priced.
- Go specific: occupations, hobbies, pets, hometowns and family events bring buyers who know exactly what they want.
- Build a collection: launch several designs around one theme so shoppers have more than one reason to stay in your shop.
Start with designs you can legally sell
Etsy can remove listings that are reported for infringing someone's trademark or copyright. Sports team logos, movie characters, brand names and song lyrics usually belong to someone else, so stick to original artwork, designs you've licensed for commercial use and ideas that are yours to sell.
Etsy also has rules about how items are made. If another business produces part of your item, check Etsy's current policy on production partners and disclose them where required.
Choose how you'll fulfill orders
Pick the model that fits your time, space and designs. Many sellers combine more than one.
| Model | How it works | Good fit when |
|---|---|---|
| Press to order | Keep blanks and transfers on hand and press each shirt after it sells | You have many designs and orders that come in unevenly |
| Small stock | Press a few of your proven designs ahead of time | You want to ship your best sellers faster |
| Ready-to-press transfers | Sell the transfer itself and have it shipped straight to your buyer | Your buyers are crafters or shops with their own heat press |
Pressing to order keeps inventory low. Unpressed transfers keep for 6–12 months in a cool, dry place when stored flat or rolled, so you can stock transfers for every listing and press only what sells.
Selling ready-to-press transfers? They ship without Tidal Colors branding, and with blind shipping we can send orders straight to your buyer. Our guide to blind shipping DTF transfers explains how it works.
One thing to know up front: we don't offer store integrations or automatic order sync, so nothing connects to your Etsy shop. You order transfers on our site as you need them. If you'd rather have finished products made for you, print on demand is available by inquiry on our print on demand page.
Order transfers efficiently with gang sheets
Instead of ordering each design on its own, put several on one gang sheet. Sheets are 22 inches wide and sold by length, from $5.99 for 1 ft, and go as low as $4.50 per foot on 20 ft and 40 ft sheets.
- Batch your listings: fill one sheet with several designs and a few spares of each.
- Size each print: place every design at the size it will print, such as 10–12 inches wide for a typical adult full front.
- Fill the gaps: tuck left-chest logos and small designs around larger prints.
Our guide on how to make a DTF gang sheet covers layout tips, and every length is listed on our DTF transfer pricing page.
Busy season coming? Restock your best sellers earlier than usual, and check our holiday order deadlines so your transfers arrive before the rush.
Price your shirts to cover Etsy fees
Etsy charges fees when you list an item and when it sells, and payment processing adds more. Fees change, so check Etsy's current fee schedule and build them into your cost per shirt instead of absorbing them later.
- Add up your cost per shirt: blank, transfer, labor, packaging and shipping supplies.
- Add Etsy's fees and any advertising you pay for.
- Apply your margin, then compare the result with similar shirts on Etsy.
For the full formula and a worked example, see our guide on how to price custom t-shirts.
Write listings that answer buyers' questions
Good listings help buyers decide without messaging you first. The same basics apply wherever you sell custom shirts online.
- Photos: show the real shirt, a close-up of the print and the shirt in natural light so colors look true.
- Titles and tags: use the words buyers search for, such as the occasion, the niche and the shirt style.
- Size chart: list measurements for the exact blank you use so buyers can check the fit.
- Care instructions: wash inside out in cold water, no bleach, no dry cleaning and air dry.
- Processing time: set a realistic time that covers ordering transfers, pressing and packing.
Press, pack and ship each order
Pre-press each shirt so it's clean, dry and wrinkle-free. Then press our transfers at 320°F (160°C) with medium pressure for 15 seconds, let the film cool completely and peel, and press again for 5 seconds under parchment paper.
Check every shirt before it ships: the print should be fully bonded with no lifting edges. Fold it neatly, add a care card and ship with tracking so your buyer can follow the order.

Every pressing step is in our DTF application guide.
Test before you launch
Before a design goes live, press it and run the shirt through a few washes. The free DTF transfer sample pack lets you try real transfers on your own blanks: you pay $4.99 for shipping and get it back as $4.99 store credit. New customers can also use WELCOME10 for 10% off the first order.
As your shop grows, our page on DTF transfers for resellers covers white-label shipping, volume pricing and tax-exempt purchasing.
Frequently asked questions
Can you connect to my Etsy shop?
No. We don't offer store integrations or automatic order sync. You order transfers on our site as you need them, and print on demand is handled by inquiry.
Can you ship directly to my Etsy buyers?
Yes. With blind shipping, we can send orders straight to your buyer in packaging without Tidal Colors branding. It suits shops that sell ready-to-press transfers. If you press the shirts yourself, have the transfers shipped to you.
How much does it cost to sell on Etsy?
Etsy charges listing, transaction and payment processing fees, and the amounts change over time. Check Etsy's current fee schedule and include the fees in your price.
Do I need a heat press?
A heat press gives the best, most consistent results, especially once orders pick up. A household iron works in a pinch if you press firmly.
How long do DTF prints last?
Our transfers are lab tested for 100+ washes. Include care instructions with every order so buyers wash their shirts the right way.
Open your shop with a first gang sheet
Start with a few designs, press to order and let your sales tell you what to restock. Fill one gang sheet with your first listings, and you'll have transfers on hand when orders come in.
