BlackKnockout DTF
We don't print the black — your shirt provides it. Black Knockout removes the black from your design and prints only the colors, so the transfer feels softer, lighter and breathes like the fabric itself.
What makes Black Knockout different?
Standard DTF lays a white underbase and full-color ink over every part of your artwork — including the black. On a black shirt that turns into a thick, heavy panel you can feel. Black Knockout takes a different route.
Feels thick and heavy
- A white underbase is printed beneath every part of the design — including the black
- Sits on a black shirt like a patch you can feel
- Stiffer, heavier and less breathable
- Hard, visible edges around large dark areas
- More ink means more weight on the garment
Becomes part of the shirt
- Every true-black area is knocked out — nothing is printed there
- Smart ink reduction, optimized for black garments
- Soft, lightweight and breathable on the body
- No boxy outline around dark artwork
- The same vivid color with far less ink
This is Black Knockout
Black Knockout is a DTF transfer built specifically for black and near-black garments. Before printing, every true-black area is knocked out of the file — nothing is printed there at all. The remaining colors are laid down with advanced halftoning, so the ink lands as thousands of fine dots instead of one solid slab.
The result is a transfer that carries maximum color with minimum ink, and a shirt that becomes part of the design instead of a background behind it.
We don't print the black. Your shirt provides it.
How Black Knockout works
Two changes in the print file, one big difference on the shirt.
The black areas are removed from the design
Before anything is printed, every true-black area of your artwork is knocked out of the print file. The printer skips it completely — no white underbase, no color, no ink. Where the black used to be, your garment shows through instead.
The rest is printed in tiny dots
The remaining colors go down with advanced halftoning — thousands of fine dots instead of one solid slab of ink. You keep full-strength color and sharp detail, on a transfer that flexes with the fabric instead of fighting it.
Press, cool and peel
Apply at 320°F / 160°C for 15 seconds with medium pressure, let it cool completely, then peel. Exactly the same settings as our standard transfers — the full walkthrough lives in our DTF application guide.
Maximum color. Minimum ink.
Less ink on the garment changes everything you feel when you wear it — and nothing you see when you look at it.

Black Knockout DTF FAQ
What is Black Knockout DTF?
Black Knockout is a DTF transfer built specifically for black and near-black garments. Every true-black area of your artwork is removed — knocked out — from the print file, so no ink is laid down there. The fabric of the shirt becomes the black in your design, and only the colored areas are actually printed.
How is it different from a regular DTF transfer?
A standard DTF transfer prints a white underbase across the whole design and then lays color on top of it — including everywhere your artwork is black. On a black shirt that becomes a thick, heavy panel with visible edges. Black Knockout skips the black entirely and prints the remaining colors with advanced halftoning, so you get the same image with far less ink on the garment.
Which garment colors can I use it on?
Black and very dark garments — black, charcoal and deep heathers work best, because the fabric has to supply the black in the design. On lighter or brightly colored garments the knocked-out areas would show the shirt color instead of black, so a standard DTF transfer is the right choice there.
Will my design look faded or washed out?
No. The colored parts of your design are printed at full strength with a white underbase where they need one — only the black areas are left unprinted. Because the halftone screen keeps detail sharp, most designs actually look richer on a black shirt, since the deepest blacks are the fabric itself rather than a layer of ink.
How should I set up my artwork?
Send a high-resolution PNG (300 DPI) with a transparent background. Use true black (#000000) anywhere you want the shirt to show through, and keep the areas you want printed in real color. If parts of your art are very dark grey rather than black, tell us — we'll confirm how they will read before we print.
What are the press settings?
The same as all of our transfers: 320°F / 160°C, 15 seconds, medium pressure, cold peel. Let the film cool completely before peeling, then finish with a 5-second second press under parchment paper for extra durability.
Is it as durable as a normal transfer?
Yes. Black Knockout transfers use the same inks, film and adhesive as the rest of our range and are lab tested for 100+ washes. Wash inside out in cold water and tumble dry low for the longest life.
Can I mix Black Knockout and standard designs on one gang sheet?
Please keep them on separate sheets. A Black Knockout sheet is prepared with a different ink and underbase setup, so mixing the two on one gang sheet would apply the wrong treatment to half your designs. Build one gang sheet for your black-garment artwork and another for everything else.
