DTF Transfer Size Guide
Use this DTF size chart to pick the right transfer width for shirts, hats and bags before you order. The ranges below are common sizes used across the print industry, so treat them as a starting point and adjust for your design and garment.
- Adult full front: 10–12" wide
- Youth full front: 6–8" wide
- Left chest: 3–4" wide
- Hat front: about 4–4.5" wide
Any design up to 22 inches wide fits on our gang sheets.

DTF size chart by placement
Width is the measurement that matters most. Pick a width from the chart and let the height follow the proportions of your artwork.
| Placement | Typical width | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Adult full front | 10–12" | Closer to 8" on small or fitted adult shirts |
| Youth full front | 6–8" | A scaled-down version of the adult design |
| Toddler full front | 5–6" | Keep artwork bold and simple |
| Left chest or pocket | 3–4" | Logos, monograms and small icons |
| Full back | 12–14" | Team names, event art and large graphics |
| Sleeve | 2.5–3.5" | Small logos, flags or a short word |
| Hat front (structured cap) | About 4–4.5" | About 2–2.5" tall |
| Tote bag | 8–10" | Centered on the front panel |
These are typical ranges, not fixed rules. A tall, narrow design often looks best at the low end of a range, while a wide, short design can use the full width.
How to choose a transfer size
Start with the garment, not the artwork. The same design can look huge on a toddler tee and lost on a large adult hoodie.
- Size for the smallest garment. If one transfer size has to work across a whole order, pick a width that still fits the smallest shirt.
- Check the height too. Tall designs can reach too far down the shirt, so measure height as well as width.
- Check your text. Keep every letter at 8 pt or larger at the final printed size, especially after you shrink a design.
- Test it on paper. Print the design at actual size and hold it against the garment before you order.
Set your file to the final print size at 300 DPI. Our DTF artwork requirements cover file types, resolution and transparent backgrounds.
Adult vs youth vs toddler sizes
Kids' shirts have a much smaller print area, so family and team orders usually need two or three sizes of the same design. Typical full-front widths are 10–12" for adults, 6–8" for youth and 5–6" for toddlers.
- One design, three widths. Make an adult, youth and toddler version so the artwork looks proportional on everyone.
- Small and fitted adult shirts. These often look better at the narrow end, around 8 to 10 inches.
- Larger adult sizes. They can carry the full 12 inches, but a wider print is not always easier to read.
Put every version on one gang sheet so they all print together.

How to measure and place a transfer
- Prep the garment. Make sure it is clean, dry and wrinkle-free, then give it a quick pre-press.
- Find the center. Fold the shirt in half lengthwise and press a light crease to line up with the middle of the design.
- Set the height. Start a full-front design a few finger-widths below the collar. Center a left-chest logo over the wearer's left chest.
- Secure it. Heat tape keeps the transfer from shifting, and it is a must on hats.
Press at 320°F (160°C) with medium pressure for 15 seconds, let the film cool completely, then peel. Our DTF application guide walks through every step, including the 5-second second press.
Hats, sleeves and other small items
Small print areas call for small, simple designs. A structured cap front typically fits a design about 4–4.5" wide and 2–2.5" tall, and sleeve prints usually run 2.5–3.5" wide.
- Hats: tape the transfer down so it stays put on the curved front.
- Tote bags: 8–10" wide is typical for the front of a standard canvas tote.
- Fine detail: thicken thin lines and keep text at 8 pt or larger.

Prefer finished caps? Our custom hats page covers embroidery with up to 15-color stitching, woven, PVC and faux-leather patches, and screen printing or DTF on flat-front and unstructured styles.
Order by size or on a gang sheet?
Once you know your sizes, choose how to order:
- Transfers by size: best for one design or a few. Order DTF transfers by size and get each design at the width you need.
- Gang sheet: best for many designs, or several sizes of the same design. Sheets are 22" wide and sold by length, starting at $5.99 for one foot.
Lay out your sheet in the free Gang Sheet Builder. It runs in your browser, needs no account and lets you preview everything before you order. Compare every length on our DTF transfer pricing page.
Frequently asked questions
What size DTF transfer should I use for an adult shirt?
A typical adult full-front design is 10–12" wide. Small or fitted shirts often look better closer to 8", and a full back usually runs 12–14" wide.
What is a standard left chest logo size?
Left chest logos are typically 3–4" wide. Keep any text in the logo at 8 pt or larger so it stays readable at that size.
What size DTF transfer fits a hat?
A structured cap front typically takes a design about 4–4.5" wide and 2–2.5" tall. Secure it with heat tape before pressing so it does not shift.
How big can a DTF transfer be?
Designs can be up to 22" wide, the full width of our gang sheets. Most shirt designs are much smaller, so check the chart above for the placement you need.
Should a family or team order use one transfer size?
Usually not. Order adult, youth and toddler versions of the design and place them all on one gang sheet so every shirt looks proportional.
